Mississippi River Days of Action

Dedicated days where we make ripples into waves.

Experiencing and connecting with the Mighty Miss is the best way to become one with the River. Experience the joy of making a real impact through hands-on activities and events. Participate in canoe excursions, restoration projects, engaging webinars, and more events that inspire action for our people, land, water, and wildlife.

River Days now begins with a new, annual tradition – a day dedicated to the River: National Mississippi River Day on June 2nd. Learn more and get involved here.

Upper Mississippi River Chapter’s Activity

All volunteer river use and creel survey. Did you know that government agencies like the DNR use anonymous surveys to monitor how many people are using the river? What is anonymous surveying you ask? They use cell phone data to track river users, but as you might guess that data lacks how people are recreating. With all the different users it's important to know how many are fishing and how many are enjoying other activities.

We also have interest in learning about fishing success rates. The fish netting and shocking surveys conducted provide information about the fish in the river, their numbers and overall health but actual fishing success is a different thing.

With those things in mind, we will be conducting a survey at public boat landings along both Wisconsin and Minnesota sides of pools 7 and 8. Volunteers will be taking 4-hour shifts talking with boaters and fishermen. If you would like to sign up to help us, you can contact us by email at umrikes@gmail.com.

Help with Mussel Cages at Genoa National Fish Hatchery

Help hatchery staff with mussel propagation! From the Hatchery Website, “The hatchery is home to one of the largest mussel culture recovery projects in North America. The Higgins eye pearly mussel has been listed under the Endangered Species Act since 1976. The hatchery produces more than 500,000 Higgins eye mussel juveniles for stocking into four river systems in the Upper Mississippi River watershed. The hatchery also propagates channel catfish and juvenile mussels for work related to the winged mapleleaf mussel recovery program. This very rare species of mussel is one of the most endangered freshwater mussels in North America.”
